Soil Association & Organic Certification

The Soil Association has a set of Health & Beauty Care Standards which have been based on those set for organic foods. Organic foods are strictly controlled under UK, European and International legislation, however, the area of organic personal care products and cosmetics is not yet subject to the same or similar legislation.

We use suppliers certified by the Soil Association wherever possible to source the necessary raw materials and we use the Soil Association guide lines to calculate the organic percentages in our products.  Aromatika is planning to commence its application for organic certification with the Soil Association as soon as possible, although we wish to be clear that we are not yet certified.

The Soil Association Health and Beauty Standards stipulate that a product must have over 95% of the total ingredients included in the organic calculations obtained from agricultural sources and they must be of certified organic origin in order to be labelled as 'organic'. The rest of the ingredients must be acceptable under the Soil Association standards and must be approved. Examples of products which we hope will fall under this category of certification will be Nourishing Balm, Baby Bottom Balm, Baby Powder, our Lip Balms, Toners and Clay Masks.

The next category in the Health & Beauty Standards includes cosmetics made with between 70% and 95% of certified organically grown ingredients. Subject to official certification, we consider most of Aromatika's creams will fall into this category because some of the ingredients necessary to make these products cannot yet be sourced organically. Plant based emulsifying wax which is one such ingredient.

Some products cannot meet the minimum requirement of 70% certified organic ingredients and this is because their ingredients are not yet available organically. Our facial scrubs fall into this category as they exfoliant materials are not available as organic.

The Soil Association organic percentage calculations exclude water unless they are floral waters which constitute more than 90% of the product, such as in Toners, however Aromatika chooses to use Highland Spring Water in our creams, which is water that has been filitered through land certified by the Soil Association as organic in order to offer you the best possible products.
